For fuller hair and frustrating brush routines

Why some brushes smooth the surface but struggle with fuller sections

If the top layer starts to look smoother while the hair underneath still feels unfinished, the bristles may not be reaching far enough through the section.

A large section of hair can look as if it is moving with the brush while much of the section remains untouched underneath. The top begins to lie flatter, but the brush still feels as if it is skimming across the surface.

In the category reviews and discussions we studied, shoppers often described bristles that felt too soft, did not reach far enough, or pushed the hair around. Those comments were about the brush category, not reviews of the Alva & Oro product. They point to one useful question. What job are the bristles designed to do?

Start with the job

One brush does not need to handle every knot and every finishing step

A dedicated detangling tool and a mixed bristle finishing brush solve different parts of the routine. Treating them as separate steps keeps the expectation clear.

Handle heavy tangles first

Start at the ends with the detangling tool that already works for your hair. Move upward as the section loosens.

Use the brush for the finishing pass

Once the knots are under control, use the mixed bristles to smooth loose hair, lengths, and gathered styles.

Shorter bristles and longer pins have different roles

The Mermaid Brush combines genuine boar bristles, longer nylon pins, and a cushioned base in one full size wooden brush.

Shorter genuine boar bristles

They work across the surface of the hair and support a smoother, more polished looking finish.

Longer nylon pins

They extend beyond the shorter bristles and add reach while you brush through fuller sections.

Cushioned base

The base adds flexibility while the shaped wooden handle gives you a substantial grip.

For hair with more volume

Smaller sections give the bristles a clearer path

A brush cannot make full contact when the section is too large for the bristles to pass through. Sectioning also gives you more control over tension and direction.

  1. 01

Clip the rest of the hair away

Choose a section that you can hold without pulling against the rest of your hair.

  2. 02

    Resolve heavy tangles

Begin at the ends with your detangling tool, then work upward as the section loosens.

  3. 03

    Finish in controlled strokes

Use the Mermaid Brush in the direction of your style, and reduce the section size if the brush still stays on the surface.

The finishing pass

Use the bristle side against the hair and follow the direction of the style

For a ponytail or gathered style, keep the bristles against the hair and brush toward the point where the hair is secured. The goal is a controlled surface finish, not a dramatic change to the hair texture.

Questions to answer before ordering

Where the Mermaid Brush fits and where it does not

Is it a dedicated detangling brush?

No. The Mermaid Brush is presented for everyday brushing, smoothing, styling, and finishing. Handle heavy knots first with a detangling tool that suits your hair.

Can it be used on fuller or dense hair?

The longer nylon pins add reach through fuller sections, but the brush will not work the same way for every hair texture. Use smaller sections and reduce the section size if the bristles stay on the surface.

What are the bristles made from?

The brush combines genuine boar bristles with longer nylon pins on a cushioned base. The genuine boar bristles mean the brush is not vegan.

What size is the brush?

The supplied size guide shows an overall length of approximately 25 cm and a width of approximately 8 cm.
