Stainless steel cutting board

The Board That Doesn't Keep The Onion.

Wood soaks up garlic. Plastic gouges and sheds. This is a sheet of 304 stainless steel you rinse like a baking tray and stand in the rack.

What it's made of

304 stainless steel, the same grade as most kitchen sinks and pots, with a brushed finish, rounded corners and a handle slot.

Will it dull my knives?

Steel is harder on an edge than wood. If you cut on it every day, give your knife a few strokes on a honing rod once a week. If you own an expensive Japanese knife, keep your wood board for that one.

How do I clean it?

Put it in the dishwasher, or soap, rinse and dry. No oiling and no sanding. Raw chicken juice washes off the same way it does from a baking tray.

The smell problem

You scrubbed it with lemon. It still smells like last week's garlic.

Wood and bamboo are porous. Onion, garlic and fish juice soak in, and baking soda only gets the top layer. Plenty of people give up and go back to plastic.

Steel has nothing for the smell to soak into. You wash the board, and the smell goes down the drain with the water.

"I can't tell myself something is clean and use it when it smells like old onions and garlic."

The honest part

Three things nobody selling steel boards tells you.

It's louder.

A knife on steel sounds like a knife on steel. Most people stop noticing after a week.

It shows scratches.

Light marks show up on the brushed finish. They don't hold smell, and you can still return it inside 30 days.

It can slide.

Put a damp towel or a silicone mat under it. That fixes it.

Storage

It stands in the dish rack. It hangs on a hook.

Thick butcher blocks end up living on the counter because nobody wants to lift them to the sink. This one goes in with one hand and stores in the gap next to your baking trays.

Plastic boards

Cut on steel, not plastic.

Chopping on plastic boards can release tiny plastic particles into food. A 2023 study measured this on polyethylene and polypropylene boards. It didn't test ours, and we won't pretend it did.
